Androscoggin County, Maine local guide: This county or county-equivalent page applies the state and national guidance and official resources below to people looking for accident information in Androscoggin County, Maine. The agency responsible for a police report or records request can depend on where the incident occurred and which agency investigated it. Confirm the agency shown on the report or incident information before requesting a record.
Short answer
In Maine, a reportable accident must be reported immediately to law enforcement with jurisdiction. Under the current statute, that means a car accident on a public way, or where public traffic may reasonably be anticipated, that involves an injury or death or apparent property damage of $2,000 or more. The operator, someone acting for the operator, or—if the operator is unknown—the knowledgeable vehicle owner must make that report. Maine Title 29-A, §2251
That immediate notice is different from the State of Maine Traffic Car accident Report. When an officer investigates a reportable accident, the officer prepares and sends the official report to the Chief of the State Police. A printed Driver Report Form, if an officer provides one at the scene, is an information sheet for the people involved; it is not the officer’s car accident report. What to do first
- If someone is injured or there is an immediate danger, call 911. The Maine State Police also advises contacting local, county, or state law enforcement when there is no injury. Vehicle Car accidents FAQ
- For a car accident meeting the statutory definition above, report it immediately by the quickest means to the state police, sheriff, or municipal police agency identified in §2251.
- Exchange and preserve the basic facts: names, addresses, driver’s-license and registration information, insurer and policy information, time, location, and contact information for people involved. The State Police lists these as information to exchange or have available when reporting. Vehicle Car accidents FAQ
- If an officer responds, ask for the investigating agency, officer’s name, incident number if available, and any driver information sheet. Save photos and other records using this car accident evidence checklist.
Maine law also has separate scene duties. After a car accident involving injury or death, an operator must stop, remain at the scene, provide specified identity, registration, and insurance information when requested, and render reasonable assistance. Title 29-A, §2252 For property damage, the operator must take reasonable steps to notify the property owner and provide the specified information. Title 29-A, §2255
Who reports what in Maine?
| Record or step | Who handles it | What the official sources say |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate report to law enforcement | The vehicle operator; a person acting for the operator; or a knowledgeable owner if the operator is unknown | This applies to a reportable accident as defined in §2251. The report goes immediately to the state police, the appropriate sheriff, or municipal police. |
| Officer’s State of Maine Traffic Car accident Report | The investigating law-enforcement officer | An officer investigating a reportable accident must interview participants and witnesses and transmit an electronic or written report to the Chief of the State Police within five days of notification. The State Police describes this as the car accident report the officer completes and sends to its Traffic Division. §2251; car accident-report FAQ |
| Driver Report Form | An investigating officer may provide it to an involved driver | This form lists driver, vehicle, car accident-location, and investigating-agency information. It helps identify the car accident for a later search; it is not the officer’s car accident report and the official FAQ does not describe it as a separate driver filing. Car accident-report FAQ |
| Secretary of State financial-responsibility follow-up | Secretary of State; vehicle owner or operator may need to respond | The Chief sends accident reports to the Secretary of State. On receipt of an accident report required by §2251, the Secretary of State is directed to demand proof of financial responsibility, subject to statutory exceptions. §2251; Title 29-A, §1602 |
The official sources reviewed here do not identify a separate ordinary driver car accident form that a driver files directly with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles after making the required immediate report. They also do not set a general insurer-notice deadline, a public-entity notice deadline, or a lawsuit deadline. Those are separate subjects from the state car accident-reporting process described on this page.
How to find or request the car accident report
Maine State Police operates the official Maine Car accident Reporting Online Search & Ordering Service. It searches the Maine State Police Car accident Database by a person’s name, date of birth, car accident location, car accident date, or investigating agency. The service says anyone may purchase a car accident report; searching is free and an order costs $10 per report. If found, most reports are sent by email within two hours. Service FAQ; online service
Have the most precise information available before searching:
- Car accident date and town, or car accident date and a person’s last name;
- An involved person’s name and date of birth;
- Investigating agency and officer name; and
- Car accident incident ID number, if you have it.
The State Police search tips identify date/town or date/last name as common electronic-search combinations. A Driver Report Form can contain the search details, but not all agencies can print one at the scene. Search tips
For a report from before 2003 that does not appear online, use the State Police manual search request. It requires the involved operator’s name and date of birth plus the car accident date or location, and contact information. The $10 manual-search fee is nonrefundable; the State Police says it will provide a status email within seven business days when an email address is supplied.
The database is not the whole investigative file
The online system is a source for the State of Maine Traffic Car accident Report, not a promise that it contains every record connected to an event. The State Police says an investigating agency may not yet have submitted a report to the Traffic Division, and that additional materials—such as narratives, witness statements, photographs, or recordings—may be held by the investigating law-enforcement agency. Service FAQ; online service
If the search does not find the report, first allow time for a submitted report to be downloaded and try again. Then contact the agency that investigated or was called to the scene. For a non-reportable car accident, the State Police specifically directs people to the department called to the scene because an incident report may be on file there. If an ATV or snowmobile car accident was handled by the Maine Warden Service, the State Police says it will not be in this database. Service FAQ
That direct-agency request is also the appropriate path for records beyond the traffic car accident report. Maine State Police notes that investigative and intelligence records are not generally public records and that release can be restricted. Investigative Records and Record Requests The car accident-report statute separately limits public dissemination of personally identifying data in the State Police accident-report database, while allowing the Chief to disclose certain basic accident and participant information and to furnish a photocopy of an investigating officer’s report on written request at the requester’s expense. §2251

What changes for a car accident
Use this version when a private passenger car is involved. The official reporting or record-request procedure below is still controlled by the crash location, investigating agency, and the facts of the event—not by the wording “car accident.”
For insurance, start with the applicable personal auto policy and the insurance rules of the crash state. Save the declarations page, insurance cards, claim number, repair estimates, and insurer communications.
- Confirm which agency investigated or holds the report.
- Keep the other vehicle and driver information with the report number.
- Keep police, motor-vehicle agency, and insurer tasks as separate checklist items.
