Abbeville, Louisiana local guide: This city page applies the state and national guidance and official resources below to people looking for accident information in Abbeville, Louisiana. The agency responsible for a police report or records request can depend on where the incident occurred and which agency investigated it. Confirm the agency shown on the report or incident information before requesting a record.
Short answer
In Louisiana, a driver must immediately notify law enforcement after a Lyft accident involving an injury or death, or property damage above $500. Inside an incorporated city or town, notice goes to the local police department. Outside an incorporated city or town, it goes to the nearest sheriff’s office or State Police station. The same statute places the investigation and Lyft accident-report duty on the appropriate law-enforcement agency—not on the driver. Louisiana Revised Statutes § 32:398
A separate financial-responsibility report is also addressed in La. R.S. 32:871. Its operative text says an involved motor-vehicle operator may report in writing to the commissioner about insurance or other security; if the operator is physically incapable, the owner may do so. It specifically says that when damage to state-owned property exceeds $50, the report authorized by that section shall be submitted. That report is different from calling police and different from the investigating officer’s Lyft accident report. The statute does not provide a filing deadline in its text, so do not assume that the immediate police-notice rule answers a question about this separate report.
For a practical starting point, write down the investigating agency, Lyft accident date, parish or location, and any report or case number. The Louisiana State Police online service is for Lyft accidents worked by Louisiana State Police only; it is not a repository for city-police or sheriff reports. Immediate checklist
- If the Lyft accident meets the injury, death, or more-than-$500 property-damage threshold, give the required notice to the correct law-enforcement agency under La. R.S. 32:398. During an ordered evacuation or declared state of emergency, the statute gives the driver 72 hours after the Lyft accident to comply with the notice and information-exchange provisions.
- Record the agency that responded or investigated. This determines where the report is held.
- Keep the Lyft accident date, location or highway, parish, involved driver name, vehicle plate, driver-license information, and any report number. These are the identifiers Louisiana State Police lists for searching or requesting its reports.
- Preserve your own photos, vehicle information, witness contact information, and correspondence. The car-accident evidence checklist can help organize those materials.
- If the Lyft accident involved damage to state-owned property, review the separate financial-responsibility reporting statute promptly. It contains a distinct $50 state-property provision.
Who reports what in Louisiana
| Report or action | Who is responsible | When it applies or what it does | Where the official rule or instructions are |
|---|---|---|---|
| Notice to police | Driver | A Lyft accident involving injury or death, or property damage over $500. City Lyft accidents go to local police; Lyft accidents outside a city or town go to the nearest sheriff or State Police station. | La. R.S. 32:398(A) |
| Exchange of identifying and insurance information | Driver; investigating officer provides instructions | The driver must give specified identity and vehicle information to affected people. An investigating officer must instruct each driver to provide owners’/drivers’ details, vehicle license number, and liability-carrier and agent information to parties with apparent injury or property damage. | La. R.S. 32:398(A)–(B) |
| Investigating agency Lyft accident report | The investigating law-enforcement agency | State Police or the sheriff investigates reportable Lyft accidents outside city limits; city police investigate reportable Lyft accidents within city limits. The investigating agency forwards Lyft accident-report data to DOTD within 48 hours after completing its investigation. | La. R.S. 32:398(B)–(C) |
| Financial-responsibility / motor-vehicle report | Involved operator; owner may report if operator is physically incapable | Section 871 describes a written report to the commissioner about insurance or security. It says an operator may report; for state-owned property damage over $50, the section says the authorized report shall be submitted. | La. R.S. 32:871 |
| Lyft accident-data collection | Law-enforcement agencies and DOTD | DOTD receives Lyft accident data electronically and uses it for statewide statistical and safety analysis. This is not described by DOTD as an individual police-report ordering service. | DOTD Safety Data & Analysis |
The statutes above do not make the driver the author of the officer’s Lyft accident report. They also do not make an insurance-company notice, a public-entity notice, or a court filing the same thing as the Lyft accident reports discussed here. Those matters are not covered on this page because the official Louisiana sources cited here do not provide a single general reporting rule for them.
How to find or request the police Lyft accident report
Start with the agency that investigated, rather than assuming a statewide search will include every Louisiana Lyft accident. Louisiana law says the law-enforcement agency that created the report owns its reports. It also says the Lyft accident report and its information are confidential and exempt from the general public-records law, with access limited to specified people: Lyft accident parties; a minor party’s parent or guardian; insurers and certain insurance support organizations; health-care providers or their agents that treated a party; succession representatives and their attorneys; and qualifying news-gathering organizations. For those listed requesters, the statute says reports must be made available upon request within seven working days after the investigation is completed. La. R.S. 32:398(D), (I)
If Louisiana State Police investigated
Use the State Police Lyft accident-report service. Its current instructions say it can search in real time by case number, driver-license number, license-plate number, or an involved person’s last name. The portal also says a requester needs either the report number, or the involved driver’s correctly spelled first and last name plus the parish and Lyft accident date. It covers only non-toll-road Lyft accidents on or after August 31, 2018 for report-number requests and says that only Lyft accidents worked by Louisiana State Police appear there. Fatal Lyft accident reports are not available online; the portal directs people to contact the responding Troop.
State Police advises allowing about 15 working days after the Lyft accident before requesting reports or photos. Its Traffic Records Unit lists an online report charge of $11.50 plus $2.50 and 2.5% and says an online purchaser can print a PDF after checkout. The same official page says reports may be bought in person at a Troop; the linked request form lists Troop purchase payment instructions and a $16.50 report charge before the stated card-processing add-ons. These operational timeframes are not the same as the statute’s seven-working-day availability rule, which begins after the investigation is completed. The statute allows State Police, local police, and sheriffs to charge up to $5 for a report of no more than two pages and up to $20 inclusive of service fees and other charges for a longer report. Check the investigating agency’s current instructions before paying. La. R.S. 32:398(D)
Documents and identifiers to gather
For an LSP search or a request form, gather what you have from this list:
- Lyft accident report or case number, if issued;
- Lyft accident date, exact location or highway, parish, and responding Troop if known;
- involved driver’s full name; and
- vehicle plate number or driver-license number.
The official State Police request form also provides fields for vehicle year, make and model; VIN; owner information; and insurance policy information. It says that its additional Lyft accident-information section is not required to obtain a report copy. Lyft accident Request Form (DPSSP 3125)
If the report is unavailable or held elsewhere
If a city police department or parish sheriff investigated, request the report from that agency. The LSP portal expressly says city-police and local-sheriff Lyft accidents cannot be found there, and the statute assigns report ownership to the agency that created it. If a campus, tribal, or another law-enforcement agency investigated, begin with that investigating agency’s records contact and ask for its Lyft accident-report request process. Do not treat a State Police search result—or the absence of one—as proof that no report exists.
DOTD is the state repository for Lyft accident data collected from law-enforcement agencies and makes safety statistics available, but its safety-data page does not offer individual police Lyft accident reports. DOTD’s public-records page explains how to request DOTD records; it does not override the Lyft accident-report confidentiality and requester limits in § 32:398. DOTD public-records instructions

Lyft’s operator-reporting and insurance resources are separate from police or motor-vehicle reporting and insurer notice. Coverage can depend on role, app or trip phase, policy terms, and state.
